Workshop Title

Quantitative Surface and Lead Authentication System (QuanTEK) for Counterfeit Mitigation


Overview

QuanTEK, developed by ChromoLogic, provides a simple, rapid, and tag-less solution to mitigate the threat of counterfeit integrated circuits and provides full track-and-trace capability of parts in both defense and commercial supply chains. Based on the principles of now-mature biometric authentication, the system is comprised of three major subsystems: the enrollment sub-system, the distribution subsystem, and the authentication subsystem. Enrollment of a part begins at a secure manufacturing or distribution point, where a unique identifier of the authentic part is enrolled within the QuanTEK system. The unique identifier is based on capturing an image of the packaged part, and mathematically generating an intrinsic software tag (iTAG). This iTAG is stored on a cloud server (the distribution sub-system) and can be accessed later down the supply chain. At the distributor, broker, or end user, authentication occurs. Authenticity is established if, after scanning the part and generating an iTAG once again, a match can be found with a stored iTAG. The iTAG is a compact and unique identifier, and can store information such as the original manufacturing site, date of manufacture, authorized distributor, and more. In addition to imaging the packaged part, imaging of the die prior to packaging can also be undertaken, providing an additional level of die-level authenticity and security. Thus, the iTAG is a secure, cost-effective, and highly-accurate authentication system that also provides full traceability. In addition to counterfeit mitigation, QuanTEK’s track-and-trace capabilities allow rapid dissemination of information related to any product process change or product recall notices, as well as rapid identification of the affected parts. Furthermore, the system is highly adaptable and may be paired with a wide range of tag-based technologies, such as UV taggants, DNA tags, 2D barcodes, and others.

Attendees will be given a complete understanding of the solution process for various types of packaged integrated circuits (ceramic, plastic, metal, hybrid packages), as well as integrated circuits with various dimensions and pin configurations. An on-site practical demonstration will highlight both ease of use and robustness of the solution. Integration of our solution within manufacturing environments and incoming inspection workflows will be discussed, as will applicability of this technique to non-electronic parts. We believe our QuanTEK solution will add value to the entire supply chain, from the original component manufacturers, to distributors/brokers, to original equipment manufacturers, and more importantly, to the DOD services programs and ultimately the safety and security of our armed forces.

Harshad Sardesai, is the Vice President of Business Development at Chromologic, LLC where he is responsible for commercialization of multiple federally funded projects related to counterfeit mitigation, non-destructive evaluation, and Raman spectroscopy. He has 18 years of experience in engineering and marketing of optical systems, having worked as a staff engineer, manager, and in senior management roles at Ciena Corporation and Sterlite Technologies. He holds a Ph.D. degree in Electrical Engineering from Purdue University, has over 40 publications in peer reviewed conferences and journals, and has been awarded 14 United States patents.
